Apple’s WWDC 2018 developer conference held last evening was all about software. The Cupertino-based did not bring any new hardware products to its event. This meant that Apple’s next set of hardware products will arrive at the fall event in September.
While Apple is expected to launch three new iPhone models this year with a design similar to that of iPhone X, it might have some surprise in store for the iPad lineup. Apple might launch the much anticipated iPad with Face ID at the fall event alongside new iPhone models. Apple has been rumored to be working on new iPad models with Face ID for sometime, and now concrete evidence has emerged confirming the rumor.
The Face ID setup UI is finally working on iPad. Clearly not done yet as can be seen by the descriptions mentioning “iPhone”. But it’s a start 🙂 pic.twitter.com/PVQgfbne15

Apple iOS developer Guilherme Rambo has been playing around with iOS 12 developer beta and the code contained within the operating system seems to confirm new iPad with Face ID support. Rambo tweeted videos and screenshots of the iOS 12 containing hidden reference to Face ID on the iPad and it also includes a setup UI and relevant section of the settings menu.
The setup menu does need work and shows reference to iPhone throughout the menu. There is a possibility that Apple will let users to unlock their iPad using Face ID on iPhone X. Apple lets you unlock a Mac with an Apple Watch but there is high likelihood of iPad getting dedicated TrueDepth camera for Face ID. The setup menu also hints at Apple having a hardware capable of facial recognition.
Watch: Apple iPhone X Review
Since the launch of iPhone X in September last year, there have been rumors of Apple bringing its Face ID facial recognition technology to other devices including iPad. One of the big advantages with Face ID on iPad would be the unified user experience across devices including iPhone and iPad. It only needs to be seen whether Face ID on iPad comes in the form of a notch or not.
