Mi Mix 2S Camera Will Be As Good As Mi 8 After Update: Xiaomi

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S in different colors

While a lot of smartphones share the same hardware modules, it is usually the software that ends up being the main differentiator between them. This trend is quite common in a lot of phone makers, including Xiaomi.

Such was the case with Xiaomi’s Mi 8 and Mi Mix 2S phones, both of which used similar camera units though recorded different DxOMark scores. In the benchmark test used as the industry standard, the former phone got a score of 105 in still imagery, while the latter earned just 101.

The main difference was in the way the Mi 8 handled low-lighting scenarios, alongside its better optical zoom.

This puts the phone just second on the DxOMark list, behind the Huawei P20 Pro, HTC U12+, Huawei P20 and Samsung S9 Plus, which is obviously high praise.

Upcoming Camera Patch

Now, Lei Jun, the founder and CEO of the company, is announcing that a software package will make sure both the cameras reach the same level of performance. The patch is expected to hit users’ phones in the coming few days.

Both the Mi 8 and Mi Mix 2S come with similar Sony IMX363 sensors on the back, with two 12 MP lenses, and an aperture of f/1.8 and f/2.4 on the two lenses. The pixel size is just 1.4-micron unit, support up to 2X optical zoom, and have a dual-tone LED flash accompanying the phone.

On the video front, the cameras are capable of recording 4K video at 60 frames per second, as well as slow-motion 1080p at 240 fps. It’s safe to conclude that the camera has potential, as it stands.
