The OnePlus 6 in China is receiving a software update for the latest version of HydrogenOS, the company’s custom overlay for its devices in its home market. The over-the-air software update brings two major changes to the OnePlus 6 – selfie portrait mode, and the option to add the battery percentage on the status bar. Both of these changes had been promised by OnePlus, and it’s good to see the company delivering quickly on its promises.

While the OnePlus 6 uses its dual-camera setup at the rear to offer portrait mode with the rear camera, the phone comes with a single-sensor setup at the front using a 16-megapixel sensor. However, OnePlus stated at launch that the new phone would soon receive a software update that would enable a software-based portrait mode at the front as well, which uses algorithms to enable the feature despite the single-camera setup. It will now be possible to shoot bokeh shots with the front camera as well.

The second key feature is a small but important change, that comes after OnePlus drew criticism from its users for dropping the battery percentage indicator from the status bar. While previous OnePlus phones have allowed users to add the exact battery percentage to the status bar, the OnePlus 6 removed the option entirely.

This was done supposedly due to the reduction of space on the status bar because of the notch. Pulling down from the status bar does show the battery percentage, but users have missed the easier visibility. The latest update brings back the ability to add the exact battery percentage, in place of simply having a circular or battery-shaped graphical indicator.

Additional fixes include general optimizations and bug fixes, along with something called ‘game optimization’ which could improve gaming on the device by boosting performance. Considering that the features are rolling out in China already, the OxygenOS update to version 5.1.6 for international versions of the device (including the OnePlus 6 sold in India) could be around the corner as well. We’ll keep you posted when the latest software rolls out to devices in India.
